Noted Vocal Artist Group Coming To Ten East Washington in Newnan:

Zaphyra Christmas Concert on December 13

One of the premier vocal artist groups in the Atlanta area is Zaphyra, which is led by Pia Maria Ugarte, who received her training at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. Ugarte has just released the following announcement about their next performance, which will be at one of the Southside's premier restaurants, Ten East Washington in Newnan. Here is that announcement:

ZAPHYRA TO PERFORM AT TEN EAST WASHINGTON

Zaphyra, will be performing a Holiday program on Sunday December 13 at Newnan’s favorite restaurant, Ten East Washington. The Fayette based vocal band will be presenting “A Touch of Christmas” from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. “It is an ideal opportunity to share with the family during this season, a Sunday after church” said Maria Pia Ugarte, founder and artistic director.

The program is being presented by Ten East Washington and Voices, which Ms. Ugarte also heads. This year Voices decided to do a smaller scale production, “so we approached the owner of Ten East, George Rasovsky. As usual, George was open and eager to participate and that is how we came up with this format.”

The band – formed by existing members Maria Pia Ugarte, Jill Safko and Paige McCauley – is joined by the winner of its fall auditions, Amy Beaucham, Newnan resident and Peachtree City teacher. “I am very excited about being a part of the group” said Ms. Beaucham. “Singing with Pia, Paige, and Jill is like singing with angels.”

Zaphyra has become well known in The Southern Crescent in its three years of existence. Its eclectic taste will offer traditional Christmas music, spirituals, inspirational, country and classical in this occasion. “There is something for every taste and member of the family and the program flows beautifully!” explained Ms. Ugarte. Among the favorites the band will be interpreting are Silent Night, the Gounod Ave Maria, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Pie Jesu, Sweet Little Jesus Boy, Winter Wonderland, Amazing Grace, Gesu Bambino, My Favorite Things, Angels We Have Heard on High and Little Drummer Boy among others.

Please call Ten East Washington at (770) 502-9100 for reservations (strongly suggested.) For more information and directions, please visit http://www.zaphyra.net/ or http://www.teneastwashington.com/

Ben Sollee Launches Another Tour By Bike... Pedaling Against Poverty

"I love touring by bicycle! After the tour to Bonnaroo I made a promise to myself that I would dedicate a portion of my yearly touring to pedal power. And so, I'm coming back for more this December with a tour through the coastal southeast. I'm looking forward to cruising at a smooth 13 mph and being a little sore at the end of the day. I'm looking forward to climbing the hills that inevitably stand before each beautiful town. I'm looking forward to meeting other folks on two wheels and inviting them to ride with us. I'm look forward to, once again, showing folks that regional touring by bicycle is very manageable. My good friends Katie and Marty Benson will be joining me again and, yes, Marty will be filming the whole thing for all those following the tour online." – Ben Sollee

Ben Sollee, besides being a phenomenal musician who has roped in adoration from Paste, NPR, No Depression, and a gaggle of bloggers, also practices what he preaches. You may be familiar with some of his sensible environmental activism (some of it featured in the upcoming documentary Wooden Box), and in keeping with that ethos, plans to launch his second bike tour, and will be raising awareness and buying a bike for Oxfam America Unwrapped program at every performance along the way.

His first one last summer redefined the idea of regional touring. It's simple – Ben straps his cello on his back and coasts through town to town at a cool 15 MPH, stopping to play impromptu gigs when appropriate. The tour to Bonnaroo last year was quite successful, so it's time for Bike Tour Redux, starting in Wilmington, North Carolina and moving south to Jacksonville, Florida. Expect updates from Ben on a daily basis for his latest vision quest.

The tour kicks off on December 4th. You can read more about his endeavors from last summer:

for a quick highlight... watch Day 5 of the Bonnaroo... lots of talk about Bike Diapers!

All of this, of course, is tied in to his forthcoming collaboration with Daniel Martin Moore, also of Kentucky, on Sub Pop called Dear Companion. It's due out February 2010 and was produced by My Morning Jacket's Jim James (making the whole project a family affair). Though the project promises to be one of the most prolific for both Ben and Daniel, they are donating their artist proceeds to environmental advocacy group, Appalachian Voices.

Dec 8 The Pour House Charleston, SC
Dec 9 ARTWorks Theater Beaufort, SC
Dec 10 Blowin' Smoke Savannah, GA
